43. Kawahara, K.


 KAWAHARA(1-2)  was born in 1888 in Japan.(3)   He immigrated about 1905.(4-5) He appeared in the census in 1910 in Santa Clara, Huerfano, Colorado where he was living as a “boarder” and working as a coal miner.(5) Kawahara appeared in the census in 1920 in Lincoln County, Wyoming where he was living with Mr. K. Sugari and Kawahara was working as a coal miner.(4) He died in a gas explosion in Frontier No. 1 coal mine on 14 August 1923 at the age of 35 in Frontier, Lincoln, Wyoming.(3,6) He was buried on 16 August 1923 in Kemmerer.(3,6) He was single.(3-4)

44. Kawase, S.


Shichizo KAWASE(1-2) was born on 27 August 1891 in Inaeda-mura, Shiga-ken, Japan to Mr. H. KAWASE, his mother’s name is unknown at this time.(3-6)  Shichizo first immigrated in 1906 and he remained in the United States until 1918.(5)  He submitted draft registration cards for WWI on 5 June 1917 in Sacramento, California where he was an unemployed farm hand and he was single.(6)  Shichizo was medium in height, medium build with brown eyes and black hair.(6)   Shichizo married Sue in Japan and then he immigrated again in April 1919 to Seattle, Washington.(5)   Shichizo remained in the United States for about a year and returned to Japan.(4)  Shichizo returned to the United States in January 1922 arriving in Seattle with his wife, Sue, and their final destination was Kemmerer, Wyoming.(4)  He died in a gas explosion in Frontier No. 1 coal mine on 14 August 1923 at the age of 31 in Frontier, Wyoming, United States.(3)   Shichizo’s body was sent to Denver, Colorado, United States where he was cremated.(1,3)   Shichizo was survived by his wife Sue and a one year old child.(2)

45. Kiddy, John


John KIDDY(1-2) was born on 4 February 1884 in Almy, Wyoming Territory to Mr. & Mrs. Thomas Kiddy.(3-5).   He appeared in the census in 1900 in Frontier, Wyoming with his widowed father and siblings.(5)  He appeared in the census in 1910 in Woodruff, Utah where he was a single, 23 year old “farm labour”(sic).(6)  John appears in the Border Crossings from Canada to the United States in April 1911 entering in Sweet Grass County, Montana.(7)   John married Dinah Lukittus Moyne on 29 March 1913 in Randolph, Utah. (9) He submitted draft registration cards for WWI in 1918 in Kemmerer, Wyoming while he was working for the OSL Railroad Company.(4)  On John’s draft registration cards is the following notation about his citizenship:  "This man became naturalized in Canada-then returned to U.S. & took out first papers--".(4)  John appeared in the census in 1920 in Lincoln County, Wyoming with his wife, five children, his two brother-in-laws and one sister-in-law.(8)  In 1920 John was working as a teacher in grade school.(8)  He applied for citizenship on 20 May 1921 in Kemmerer, Wyoming.  (10)   John died in a gas explosion in Frontier No. 1 coal mine on 14 August 1923 at the age of 39 in Frontier, Wyoming, United States.(3)  He was buried on 17 August 1923 in Kemmerer, Wyoming.(3)  At the time of his death, John had 5 dependents ranging in age from 9 years old to 4 years old.(2)

Weki and working as a coal miner.(4)  Kirino died in a gas explosion in Frontier No. 1 coal mine on 14 August 1923 at the age of 53 in FrontierWyoming.(3,5)  He was buried on 16 August 1923 in Kemmerer, Wyoming.(3,5)  At the time of his death, Kirino was married with no dependents.(2,3)

K. KOJIMA(1-3)  was born about 1901 in Japan.(4)  He died in a gas explosion in Frontier No. 1 coal mine on 14 August 1923 at the age of 22 in Frontier, Wyoming.(2,4)  Kojima was buried on 17 August 1923 in Kemmerer, Wyoming, United States.(2,4) He was single.(4)

48. Kozaki, Iwamatsu


Iwamatsu KOZAKI(1-2) was born on 4 October 1887 in Nakalsuinura, Fukuokaken, Japan.(3-4).   He submitted draft registration cards for WWI on 5 June 1917 in Salt Lake City, Utah where he was a laborer working for Utah Iron and Steel Company in Midvale.(4).  Iwamatsu was married, short in height, medium build with dark brown eyes and black hair.(4)  On his draft card is a handwritten note stating:  "The race of the Japanese is so violently discussed that answer to number ten is almost universal" whereas, question number ten asks race to which is handwritten, “don’t know.”(4)  Iwamatsu died in a gas explosion in Frontier No. 1 coal mine on 14 August 1923 at the age of 35 in Frontier, Wyoming.(3)  His body was shipped to Denver, Colorado where he was cremated.(3)

50. Kusnirik, Mike



Mike KUSNIRIK(1-2) was born on 27 September 1867 in Yugoslavia.(3-6)  He immigrated between 1885 and 1900.(5-6) Mike KUSNIRIK and Elizabeth CHINTALA(6) were married about 1892.(5-7)  The 1910 Census states Mike immigrated in 1885 and was an "Al" (alien); however, the 1920 Census states Mike immigrated in 1900 and was "Na" (naturalized).  Before settling in Wyoming, Mike and Elizabeth lived in Montana, where their first child was born.(6)  Mike appeared in the census in 1910 in Frontier, Wyoming living with his wife Elizabeth and their six children and two male boarders.(6)  Mike appeared in the census in 1920 at Election District 8 in Lincoln County, Wyoming with his wife and six children.(5)  He died in a gas explosion in Frontier No. 1 coal mine on 14 August 1923 at the age of 55 in Frontier, Wyoming.(3-4) He was buried on 17 August 1923 in Kemmerer, Wyoming.(3-4)   Ten days after his death, Mike’s family printed the following words in The Kemmerer Republican:

These few weak words of heartfelt thanks are extended to those kindly souls who assisted us in many ways during our sad bereavement in the loss of our husband and father, Mike Kusnirik, in the horror of August 14.  Especially do we thank the members of the K. of C. Ferinando “Fred” LODDO(1-2)  was born in 1893 in Italy.(3-4) He immigrated about 1919.(5)  He appeared in the census in 1920 in Cherry Grove, Oregon, living as a single boarder working as a repair laborer for the railroad.(5)  Also, listed as a boarder living at the same residence in 1920 is Johnnie Loddo, 36 years old, from Italy, single and his immigration was in 1911. It is currently unknown if or how Ferinando and Johnnie are related.  Ferinando died in a gas explosion in Frontier No. 1 coal mine on 14 August 1923 at the age of 30 in Frontier, Wyoming.(3-4)  He was buried on 17 August 1923 in Kemmerer, Wyoming.(3-4) He was single.(1-2)

George LUPCHO(1-2)   was born on 5 August 1895 in Scranton, Pennsylvania to Andrew and Barbara Lupcho.(3-6)  At age five, he appeared in the census in 1900 in East Union, Schuylkill, Pennsylvania living with his parents and siblings.(5)   At age fifteen, he appeared in the census in 1910 in Frontier, Wyoming where he was living with his siblings and parents.(7)   George filled out draft registration cards for WWI on 5 June 1917 in Frontier, Wyoming.(6)  George was tall with a medium build with blue eyes and light hair and he was working as a coal miner for the Kemmerer Coal Company in the Number 3 Frontier Mine.(6)  He appeared in the census in 1920 at Lincoln County, Wyoming living with his widowed father and siblings, and where he was incorrectly recorded as “Georgia” and as a female.(8)   George LUPCHO and Annie NORMAN(9) were married on 16 October 1921 in Kemmerer, Wyoming.(9) George died in a gas explosion in Frontier No. 1 coal mine on 14 August 1923 at the age of 28 in Frontier along with his father, Andrew , and his younger brother Joe.(3)  George was buried on 17 August 1923 in Kemmerer, Wyoming.(3)  

George’s family printed the following Card of Thanks in the Kemmerer Republican:

To all of our neighbors and friends, as well as the members of the K. of C. lodge and U.M.W. of A. No. 2360, our heartfelt thanks is extended for the many manifestations of sympathy and kindly deeds performed for us during our bereavement in the loss of our dear father and brothers, Andrew, George and Joseph Lupecho, who met death Tuesday, August 14, in the terrible disaster.  It is comforting to know that the finer feelings of love and devotion to fellow beings in distress still exists.

Andrew LUPCHO(1-3) was born in May 1869 in Austria/Hungary.(4-6)  Andrew immigrated about 1887 and was naturalized by 1900.(5)  Andrew LUPCHO and Barbara SHINTELLI(4,7-8) were married on 17 May 1893 in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.(4,6,9)  He appeared in the census in 1900 in East Union, Pennsylvania with his wife and four children where he was working as a coal miner.(5)  He appeared in the census in 1910 in Frontier, Wyoming, with his wife and nine children.(7)  On 4 June 1915, Andrew’s wife Barbara died from “apoplexy” while she was preparing breakfast.(14)  Andrew and Barbara had ten children the youngest child being one and a half years old.(14)  Andrew appeared in the census in 1920 in Lincoln County, Wyoming with his children.(1)  Andrew and his two sons, George (aged 28) and Joe (about 16) were all killed in a gas explosion in Frontier No. 1 coal mine on 14 August 1923 in Frontier, Wyoming.(6) Andrew was 54 years old.(3,5-6)  He was buried next to his wife on 17 August 1923 in Kemmerer, Wyoming.(6)

Joe LUPCHO(1-2) was born in 1907 in Wyoming to Andrew Lupcho and Barbara Shintelli.(2-6)   He appeared in the census in 1910 in Frontier, Wyoming living with his parents and siblings.(5)  He appeared in the census in 1920 in Lincoln County, Wyoming, living with his widowed father and siblings.(4) Joe, his father Andrew and his older brother George, were all killed in a gas explosion in Frontier No. 1 coal mine on 14 August 1923 in Frontier, Wyoming.(3)  Joe was 17 years old.(2-6) He was buried on 17 August 1923 in Kemmerer, Wyoming.(3)  
Appearing in the Kemmerer Republican was the following article entitled, First Day at Work:

No family in Frontier was more sadly smitten by the explosion than that of Andrew Lupcho, who lost his life along with his two sons, George and Joe.  Joe had been off duty for two weeks suffering from an injured knee, sustained in the mine, and had just been released the morning of the accident when he was killed.(7)

He never married and was the youngest coal miner killed in the accident.(2)

56. Maginio, (John) Gioanni Battista


John MAGNINO(1-2) was born on 9 April 1889 in Sparone, Italy to Giovanni Magnino and Madaline Riva-Rovado.(3-4,7) He immigrated about 1907.(5)  John married Justina RIVA(7) on 16 July 1914 in Hancock, Michigan.(7)  He submitted draft registration cards for WWI on 5 June 1917 or 1918* in Salt Lake City, Utah.(4)  At the time, John was working in mining for the Apex Company in Bingham, Utah.(4)  He was of medium height, slender  build, with brown eyes and brown hair.(4)  On the draft card, it is asked, “Has person lost arm, leg, hand foot, or both eyes, or is he otherwise disabled (specify)?” and in the following explanation space it is handwritten, “three fingers, eye.”(4)   John appeared in the census in 1920 at Precinct 10 in Salt Lake City with his wife Justina, one son and one daughter.(5)  In 1920 John was working as a coal miner.(5)  He died in a gas explosion in Frontier No. 1 coal mine on 14 August 1923 at the age of 34 in Frontier, Lincoln, Wyoming.(3)  He was buried on 17 August 1923 at Kemmerer City Cemetery in Kemmerer, Wyoming.(3,6)

*Note:  The specific year is not recorded on John’s WWI draft registration cards.  The draft cards were filled out in 1917 and 1918.

Marco MAJNINO(1-2) was born on 27 January 1886 in Bagnacavallo, Ravenna, Italy to Mr. Majnino and Emilia PASQUALI.(3-5)  He immigrated on 8 September 1922 to New York.(5)   He sailed on the ship the America, leaving the port of Genoa, Italy.(5)  Marco paid passage by himself and was in the U.S. previously during 1914 in New Castle, Pennsylvania.(5)  Waiting at Marco’s final destination was his brother-in-law Manzani SERAFINO, New Castle, Pa, 826 Chestnut Street.(5) Marco died in a gas explosion in Frontier No. 1 coal mine on 14 August 1923 at the age of 37 in Frontier, Wyoming.(3-4)  Marco was buried on 17 August 1923 in Kemmerer, Wyoming.(4) He was single.(4)

John H. MARTIN(1-2) was born about 1884 in Kansas.(3)  He died in a gas explosion in Frontier No. 1 coal mine on 14 August 1923 at the age of 39 in Frontier, Wyoming.(3)  John was buried on 17 August 1923 at Kemmerer City Cemetery in Kemmerer, Wyoming.(3)
