99. Zumbrennen, John W.


John William ZUMBRENNEN(12) was born on 15 November 1884 in Montpelier, Bear Lake, Idaho Territory to Arnold ZUMBRENNEN and Mary EGGEN.(34) Sixteen-year-old John appeared in the census in 1900 in Thomas Fork, Bear Lake, Idaho living with his parents and seven siblings.(5) He appeared in the census in 1910 in Randolph, Rich, Utah living as a “boarder” and working as a miner in the phosphate mine.(6)  John married Viola Namoi BROWN on 22 July 1912 in Coalville, Utah.(7,12)   John submitted draft registration cards for WWI on 15 September 1918 in Lincoln, Wyoming where he was employed as a “wood chopper” for the Frontier Supply Company.(7) He appeared in the census in 1920 in Lincoln County, Wyoming living with his wife, Viola and five children and he was employed as a miner.(8)  He died in a gas explosion in Frontier No. 1 coal mine on 14 Aug 1923 at the age of 38 in Frontier, Lincoln, Wyoming.(.34,9)  John’s cousin, John Alfred ZUMBRENNEN was also killed in the mine.(10-11)
An article in the Kemmerer Republican reported:

The bodies of John A. and John W. Zumbrennen, cousins, were shipped to Montpelier, Ida., two days following their untimely death in the mine explosion, where funeral services were held.  It was one of the largest funerals ever held in the Idaho city, and the caskets were smothered with flowers, one wreath representing a wagon wheel with a spoke missing.  Mr. and Mrs. H.A. Bahem took the widow and six children, of John W., the oldest of whom is only 10 years, to Montpelier in their car Friday morning.  Three speakers extolled the virtues of the departed.(13)

John was buried on 19 August 1923 in Montpelier, Bear Lake, Idaho, and was survived by his widow and six dependent children ranging in ages from 10 to 3 years old.(34)
