55. Lupcho, Joe


Joe LUPCHO(1-2) was born in 1907 in Wyoming to Andrew Lupcho and Barbara Shintelli.(2-6)   He appeared in the census in 1910 in Frontier, Wyoming living with his parents and siblings.(5)  He appeared in the census in 1920 in Lincoln County, Wyoming, living with his widowed father and siblings.(4) Joe, his father Andrew and his older brother George, were all killed in a gas explosion in Frontier No. 1 coal mine on 14 August 1923 in Frontier, Wyoming.(3)  Joe was 17 years old.(2-6) He was buried on 17 August 1923 in Kemmerer, Wyoming.(3)  
Appearing in the Kemmerer Republican was the following article entitled, First Day at Work:

No family in Frontier was more sadly smitten by the explosion than that of Andrew Lupcho, who lost his life along with his two sons, George and Joe.  Joe had been off duty for two weeks suffering from an injured knee, sustained in the mine, and had just been released the morning of the accident when he was killed.(7)

He never married and was the youngest coal miner killed in the accident.(2)
